Case Management (Student Support)

The Higher Education Case Managers Association (HECMA) provides the following definition for Case Management:

"Higher Education Case Managers serve their University and individual students by coordinating prevention, intervention, and support efforts across campus and community systems to assist at-risk students and students facing crises, life traumas, and other barriers that impede success."

  • Mission and Vision
  • Mission
UC Davis Case Managers are a non-emergency resource who serve students facing difficult times in life which are impeding their holistic success.  We do this by connecting them to resources and support across campus and in the surrounding community to promote their safety, academic persistence, and overall well being. We also serve the campus community at large by being a hub of information and a collaborative resource to staff, faculty and students.
    Vision
We envision a campus where students know where to turn to get support when facing traumas, crises, or any barrier to success. We envision a campus where our colleagues and campus partners are able to connect students to an interdependent network of support that works collaboratively and effectively.  We envision a campus that prioritizes the safety and well-being of our entire community and where students and campus partners alike feel valued, empowered, and respected.
  • Case Managers' responsibilities include the following:
  • ⇢ Connect students with campus and community resources
⇢ Advocate for students who are in crisis or facing barriers to success
⇢ Provide consultation to faculty and staff regarding students of concern and aid in  problem-solving
⇢ Serve on the UC Davis Students of Concern Response Team (SCRT) (see sidebar on left).
⇢ Coordinate services for students (respondents) who are being investigated for sexual assault, domestic/dating violence, or stalking
⇢ Provide outreach and workshops to student, staff, faculty, students, and departments to support students who are in distress
OSSJA Case Managers are not licensed counselors and do not provide therapy.
  • When to Refer
  • Anyone can contact a case manager when they are concerned about a student -- including another student. The student may be in distress due to emotional issues, health, family or personal relationships, grades, academic standing, or other problems. Please submit a Student Support Referral when you first notice that a student appears to be in distress as it is often difficult to determine when a student's problem is serious -- and it's better to err on the side of caution. Referring to the OSSJA Case Managers when you are concerned about a student does not get the student in trouble, but ensures a coordinated response. We are here to help.
